To evaluate the role of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), a key inflammatory cytokine, in cytomegalovirus-associated gastrointestinal disease, we quantitated the level of TNF-alpha messenger RNA (mRNA) in esophageal mucosa from patients with cytomegalovirus-associated esophagitis and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.
