Protamines are cationic peptides that exert antimicrobial activity. We have examined the evolution of bacterial resistance to protamine sulphate and the resulting effects on fitness and physiology, with the objective of increasing knowledge about mechanisms of bacterial resistance to antimicrobial peptides.
