Early-onset periodontitis (EOP) is considered to have a genetic basis, which has not been clearly defined. The tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) gene polymorphism as one of the genetic factors may influence the expression of several chronic inflammatory diseases. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the polymorphisms in the 5'-flanking region of the TNF-alpha gene are associated with Japanese EOP patients.
