FUNCTION: Associates with IFNAR2 to form the type I interferon receptor. Receptor for interferons alpha and beta. Binding to type I IFNs triggers tyrosine phosphorylation of a number of proteins including JAKs, TYK2, STAT proteins and IFNR alpha- and beta- subunits themselves. SUBUNIT: Heterodimer with IFNAR2; in presence of interferon alpha and beta ligands, the heterodimer forms the type I interferon receptor. Interacts with STAT1 and STAT2; the interaction requires its phosphorylation at Tyr-466. Interacts with IFNAR2. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Isoform 1: Membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein. ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTS: Event=Alternative splicing; Named isoforms=3; Name=1; IsoId=P17181-1; Sequence=Displayed; Name=2; Synonyms=Sol-1, Soluble form 1; IsoId=P17181-2; Sequence=VSP_029930, VSP_029931; Note=Incomplete sequence; Name=3; Synonyms=Sol-2, Soluble form 2; IsoId=P17181-3; Sequence=VSP_029928, VSP_029929; Note=Incomplete sequence; TISSUE SPECIFICITY: IFN receptors are present in all tissues and even on the surface of most IFN-resistant cells. Isoform 1, isoform 2 and isoform 3 are expressed in the IFN-alpha sensitive myeloma cell line U266S. Isoform 2 and isoform 3 are expressed in the IFN-alpha resistant myeloma cell line U266R. Isoform 1 is not expressed in IFN-alpha resistant myeloma cell line U266R. PTM: Phosphorylated on tyrosine residues by TYK2 tyrosine kinase. SIMILARITY: Belongs to the type II cytokine receptor family. SIMILARITY: Contains 3 fibronectin type-III domains. SEQUENCE CAUTION: Sequence=AAH02590.1; Type=Miscellaneous discrepancy; Note=Contaminating sequence. Potential poly-A sequence; WEB RESOURCE: Name=SeattleSNPs; URL="http://pga.gs.washington.edu/data/ifnar1/"; GENE SYNONYMS: IFNAR.
