While fatty acid synthesis from acetyl CoA proceeds in the cytosol, most acetyl CoA in the cell is generated within the mitochondria, by oxidative decarboxylation of the pyruvate derived from glycolysis, as well as from a number of reactions of amino acid catabolism.<BR>Mitochondrial Acetyl-CoA is transported to cytoplasm as citrate to participate in fatty acid biosynthesis. Mitochondrial citrate synthase, a tricarboxylic acid transporter in the inner mitochondrial membrane, and cytosolic citrate lyase are involved in this transport.
