The human SLC5A7 gene encodes a sodium- and chloride-dependent, high affinity choline transporter, CHT (Apparsundaram S et al, 2000). CHT transports choline from the extracellular space into neuronal cells and is dependent on Na+ and Cl- ions for transport (Okuda T and Haga T, 2000). Choline uptake is the rate-limiting step in acetylcholine synthesis.
