The amino acid L-proline can act as a neurotransmitter. Its actions are terminated by its re-uptake from the synaptic cleft into the pre-synaptic terminal in the brain. This re-uptake is mediated by a sodium-dependent proline transporter, PROT (Shafqat S et al, 1995).
