The human SLC5A3 gene encodes a Na+/myo-inositol transporter, SMIT (Berry GT et al, 1995). SMIT functions in cellular osmoregulation and is expressed in many human tissues including skeletal muscle, brain, kidney, and placenta. It transports myo-inositol together with two Na+ ions. SMIT is also thought to act as a glucose sensor that generates an intracellular glucose signal.
