NIS is localized in the basolateral membrane facing the bloodstream and mediates iodide accumulation into thyrocytes.Defects in SLC5A5 cause congenital hypothyroidism due to dyshormonogenesis type 1 (CHDH1) (Fujiwara H et al, 1997).
