Elongation of very long chain fatty acids protein 3 (ELOVL3) catalyzes the reaction of palmitoyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA to form 3-oxooctadecanoyl-CoA (3-oxostearoyl-CoA), CO2, and CoASH. Indirect data from studies of transfected cells expressing ELOVL3 are consistent with its localization to the endoplasmic reticulum and activity on palmitoyl-CoA (Kobayashi et al. 2007).
