SLC34A3 is almost exclusively expressed in the kidney and encodes the Na+/Pi cotransporter NaPi-IIc (Segawa H et al, 2002). The protein is located at apical membranes of proximal tubules. It cotransports two Na+ ions with every Pi (electroneutral transport). Defects in SLC34A3 are the cause of hereditary hypophosphatemic rickets with hypercalciuria (HHRH) (Bergwitz C et al, 2006)
