These actions are mediated by melatonin receptors. Melatonin can also function as a powerful antioxidant in the protection of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA.There are two melatonin receptors in humans, MT1 (Mel1a, MTNR1A) and MT2 (Mel1b, MTNR1B).
