The GPR54 gene appears to be essential for normal puberty and gonadotropin-released hormone physiology (Seminara SB et al, 2003). Metastin is encoded by the KiSS-1 metastasis suppressor gene, a 54-amino acid peptide that suppresses metastases of human melanomas and breast carcinomas without affecting tumorigenicity (Ohtaki T et al, 2001).
