Protein involved in the synthesis of the biochemical messenger and regulator serotonin which is formed by the hydroxylation and subsequent decarboxylation of L-tryptophan. In humans, serotonin mediates several important physiological functions, including neurotransmission, gastrointestinal motility, hemostasis and cardiovascular integrity.
