Human UDP-galactose 4-epimerase is a bifunctional enzyme that interconverts UDP-glucose and UDP-galactose as well as UDP-N-acetylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc) and UDP-N-acetylgalactosamine (UDP-GalNAc). The recombinant human enzyme has been expressed in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia pastoris expression systems. Its epimerization activity on UDP-galactose and UDP-GalNAc substrates was demonstrated in both crude and purified preparations of enzyme |CITS: [15175331]|. The Sus scrofa (pig) enzyme has been purified directly from submaxillary gland and was also shown to catalyze the interconversion of both UDP-glucose and UDP-galactose, and UDP-GlcNAc and UDP-GalNAc |CITS: [6885800]|.
