These proteins function as monooxygenases utilizing NADPH for the reduction of molecular oxygen via a membrane bound electron transfer system. CYP11B2 localizes to the mitochondrial inner membrane and catalyzes the conversion of 11-deoxycortisone to aldosterone in three distinct reactions at a single active site. |CITS: [1741400]|. In these reactions the electrons from NADPH are transferred to a flavin containing protein, ferredoxin reductase and subsequently to ferredoxin (a non-heme iron-sulfur protein), to CYP11B2 and finally to activate the oxygen substrate |CITS: [9029726]|. The enzyme has steroid 18-hydroxylase activity to synthesize aldosterone and 18-oxocortisol as well as steroid 11 beta-hydroxylase activity.
