NCI: Human CYP2D6 wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 22q13.1 and is approximately 4 kb in length. This allele, which encodes cytochrome P450 2D6 protein, plays a role in the metabolism of drugs and xenobiotics. The CYP2D6 gene is highly polymorphic in the human population. Many allelic variants of this gene contribute to the poor metabolizer phenotype. Conversely, two variant alleles of this gene contribute to the rapid metabolizer phenotype. Individuals who are poor metabolizers of cytochrome P450 2D6 substrates are at increased risk for the development of pesticide-induced somatic Parkinson's disease.
