GO: A membrane-tethered derivative of the centriole, and the site of assembly and remodelling of the cilium. As well as anchoring the cilium, the basal body is thought to provide a selective gateway regulating the entry of ciliary proteins and vesicles by intraflagellar transport. [PMID:21750193]
