Structure of tractus olivocochlearis

CSP: bundle of nerve fibers which arise from cells in or adjoining the superior olive and pass dorsomedially as the peduncle of the superior olive; most fibers cross the median plane and leave the brain stem with the vestibular nerve, then join the cochlear nerve and enter the cochlea; they cross the inner tunnel of the spiral organ as tunnel fibers and end primarily on the outer hair cells, presumably to modulate the function of the inner hair cells; these connections are thought to inhibit unwanted auditory impulses and sharpen frequency resolving power.
