UMD: Flat, woven (e.g., knitted) materials with an open texture and evenly spaced holes. Mesh used for medical purposes is typically made of a biocompatible substance that is synthetic (e.g., a polymer), metallic (e.g., surgical stainless steel), or a combination of both. A mesh is typically implanted to support or protect soft tissue in surgical procedures (e.g., to prevent relapse of hernias, to protect tissue during abdominal wall reconstruction and plastic surgery) and/or bone in orthopedic reconstructive procedures (e.g., cranioplasty).
