NCI: Transient or permanent diabetes mellitus that affects neonates. It is caused by the inability of the pancreas to secrete sufficient insulin in response to elevated levels of glucose in the blood. The transient diabetes mellitus lasts for weeks or months and may return in adolescence or in adulthood. The permanent diabetes mellitus does not disappear and is caused by mutations in the KCNJ11, GCK, and IPF1 genes.
