UMD: Devices designed to provide temporary ventilation and/or respiratory assistance by delivering an appropriate volume of gas to the respiratory airways. Most ventilators deliver gas to the lungs using positive pressure by means of a mouthpiece, mask, tracheostomy, or an endotracheal tube, but some of them (e.g., tank ventilators) are based on the application of negative pressure to the body surface or chest wall.
