GO: Compensating for the two-fold variation in X-chromosome:autosome ratios between sexes by a global inactivation of all, or most of, the genes on one of the X-chromosomes in the XX sex. [GOC:jl, ISBN:0140512888, PMID:11498577],NCI: A human early embryonic event in which in any given cell one of a female's two X chromosomes becomes inactivated and converted into a Barr body. After inactivation has occurred, all descendants of that cell have the same inactivated X chromosome. Thus, X-inactivation creates cell clones with differing effective gene content.
