UMD: Implantable tubular devices typically designed for temporary (e.g., one week, several weeks) use as an artificial nerve or tendon sheath. These devices may consist of synthetic (e.g., silicone elastomer) or biodegradable materials or, less frequently, autograft or allograft implants and may have one closed end. Nerve/tendon sheath implants are placed during surgical procedures; they are used for nerve repair and/or protection during healing and/or to cap the end of a nerve to prevent the formation of neural (e.g., in the optic or peripheral nerves) tumors (i.e., neuromas) or to facilitate the healing of a tendon (e.g., hand flexor).
