UMD: Telemedicine information systems used to electronically transmit and receive images of microscopic pathology preparations and/or specimens and consultative text to and from one or more remote sites. Pathology telemedicine systems are mostly used by small remote hospitals and in emergency situations to transmit cytology/histology images to a pathologist at a larger hospital or laboratory for review, interpretation, and/or consultation.
