UMD: Devices designed to obtain a small quantity (i.e., a sample) of a substance. These devices may take samples of gases, liquids, and/or solids, including particulates. Samples are usually taken for analysis of their content. Both simple devices for manual tests and completely automated samplers are used in clinical laboratories; automated samplers are also available to obtain samples of substances that are present in the environment.
