UMD: Systems that produce an image by moving a beam (e.g., x-ray, electron) across an object or by sensing with a detector around an object. Scanning systems are used in the field of medicine to obtain and display images (most of them tomographic) of the body using x-rays, ultrasound, magnetic resonance, or other means. These systems usually include a scanner and computerized processing devices and may also include digital capabilities.
