UMD: Devices designed to restore or assist the physiologic function of a patient's cardiac and/or respiratory system for a short time when the performance of one or both of those systems is inadequate to sustain life or is completely absent. Most resuscitators are simple in design and operation, permitting their use in emergencies both inside and outside the hospital, and also during transportation. Resuscitators are typically used in emergency rooms, ambulances, patient care areas throughout the hospital, and in emergency rescue.
