UMD: Immunoassay analyzers that attach a radioactive substance (e.g., iodine 125) as a label to the antigen and then measure the concentration of the ligand (the substance being analyzed) in the specimen under analysis using the result of the antigen-antibody reaction. These analyzers usually include a sampler; pipetting, mixing, and incubation devices; a separation mechanism (to separate the free ligand from the ligand-binder complex), a radioactivity counter (beta or gamma counter), and a data-processing (data reduction) computerized device. Radioimmunoassay analyzers are used as a specific technique for measuring analytes (e.g., hormones, vitamins, viruses) in patient body-fluid samples, such as serum or urine.
