MSH: Replacement for a knee joint.,UMD: Implantable prostheses designed for total or partial replacement of the knee joint. Partial knee prostheses may consist of a femoral component including a metal part that replaces the distal surface of the femur, a tibial component including a plastic spacer and metal tray that is attached to the tibia, or a patellar component (usually a plastic cap) that replaces the surface of the kneecap. The prosthesis components can be anchored to the bone using orthopedic cement (e.g., epoxy) or by integration using mechanical attachments (e.g., bolts) that hold the prosthesis in place until bone grows. Total knee joint prostheses typically include all three (i.e., femoral, tibial, and patellar) components. Knee joint prostheses are used to stop bones from rubbing against each other in patients who suffer from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, as well as after trauma (e.g., fracture).
