An overview of current issues in the education of children with mental retardation in Arab countries was presented and salient features of available programs were described. Major problems facing Arab practitioners working with this population were also discussed. The conclusion was made that despite serious challenges, special education programs for children with mental retardation in Arab countries are gradually evolving, making the outlook for these children more promising.
