PIP: 5 women with clincally diagnosed Stein-Leventhal syndrome were administered a single injection of 125 mg of 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone-caproate combined with 5 mg of estradiol dipropionate on the 6th day of the menstrual cycle. 10 blood samples were taken, one 2 days before the treatment and rest in 12-hour intervals after the treatment. These samples were radioimmunologically analyzed to determine the levels of follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone (LH). 3 out of 5 of the cases showed a significant increase in the level of LH after the treatment. A conspicuous analog in LH elimination after the application with LH secretion in spontaneous ovulation cycles lead to the assumption that there is some participation of 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone in the physiology of ovulation. In those cases where no characteristic reaction in LH secretion appeared, an altered stimulant feedback of ovarian steroids was assumed. This is in agreement with the failure of clomifen in the treatment of several cases of this disease.
