This paper presents the postoperative x-ray morphology and clinical findings of surgically cleared maxillary sinuses. 64 patients who had undergone osteoplastic surgery as well as 48 patients subjected to conventional classical Caldwell-Luc surgery could be followed up. Those patients on whom osteoplastic maxillary surgery had been performed, had significantly fewer postoperative complaints than patients subjected to osteoplastic surgery (p < 0.05). X-ray morphology also differed significantly between the two groups. For example, patients with osteoplastic trepanation showed a significantly higher rate of maxillary sinuses with complete pneumatisation (p < 0.01) during follow-up. By contrast, osteoclastic operations showed more postoperative total opacity (p < 0.01) and marginal opacities (p < 0.05) in the maxillary sinuses.
