Significant progress has been made in understanding the epidemiology, natural history, and management of Kawasaki disease since 1967. The introduction of intravenous gamma globulin therapy as well as more vigilant care has reduced the mortality rate to well below 1%. Major goals for future research are to identify the etiology and pathogenesis of Kawasaki disease and the associated coronary artery disease and to develop more precise diagnostic techniques and therapy.
