This study is the first application of molecular-genetic methods for diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Poland. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with primers targeted to insertion sequence-like element 6110 (IS6110) was used in the examination of sputum from 60 patients (30 with tuberculosis and 30 with other respiratory tract diseases). Results obtained by PCR were compared to microbiological methods (fast-acid staining, culture) and clinical examination. We found a 100% specificity of PCR.
