In three patients with endocrine orbitopathy and motility disturbances the affected extraocular muscles were recessed under topical anesthesia, taking the degree of active motility, which was checked intraoperatively, into account. The advantages of the use of topical anesthesia in patients suffering from endocrine orbitopathy are discussed.
