PIP: A number of women with IUDs were hysterographically (in 1 case electromyographically) examined to see the change in shape of the uterine cavity. 1 of the women was pregnant because of the failure of her IUD. All the hysterograms showed a known deformity of the cavity, regardless of the length of time since the IUD had been inserted, except in the case of the pregnant woman where no distortion was detected. The electromyographic examination showed that after the insertion of the IUD the activity of the myometrium increases; its contractability becomes very irregular as well. The lack of these effects in the case of the pregnant woman is explained by the relaxation of the myometrium caused by the blockage of oxytocin in graviditae.
