PIP: 42 women with second trimester pregnancies were administered abortions by means of an intraamnial injection of a 25% saline solution. Indirect fetal cardiograms were taken before, during, and after the injection of the saline solution. Disturbances of the fetal heart rate began during the administration. Lasting bradycardia was then established, which gradually increased until the QRS complexes completely disappeared, an average of 140 minutes after the administration was terminated. 3 types of electrocardiographic changes were observed: the appearance of bradycardia after a certain period of time, the immediate sharp appearance of bradycardia lasting until the disappearance of the QRS complexes, and the appearance of tachycardia for a certain period of time after which the heart rate sharply slowed. Recordings were made every 5 minutes until the disappearance of the QRS complexes.
