PIP: Possibilities for pharmacological control of male fertility are disc ussed. These may involve inhibition of spermatogenesis, of epididymal function, of motility of the vasa deferentia, or of sperm capacitation in the uterus. Anti-spermatogenetic substances include certain metals, natural and synthetic androgens, estrogens, gestagens, and antiandrogens. Autoimmunization is also being studied. Blocking of epididymis function with cyproterone acetate, and of vasal motility with guanethidine are also being studied. Gestagens may affect sperm capacitation in utero. None of these substances are suitable for use as a contraceptive, however, because of serious undesirable side effects.
