In hypotension-prone patients, conventional bicarbonate dialysis (BD) causes a reduced cardiovascular tolerance to the treatment with respect to acetate-free biofiltration (AFB). One possible explanation is an overproduction of endogenous NO (nitric oxide) due to the residual quote of acetate (4 mM) in the BD dialysate formulation. NO overload might cause the impairment of cardiovascular reactivity observed during BD. In this study, a potential direct impact of the residual quote of acetate on the cardiac cells was investigated.
