Primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is characterized by the presence of angiogenesis, which is necessary for tumor growth, progression and distant metastasis. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is clearly expressed in HCC, in variable degrees as a function of differentiation and vascularisation.
