The synthesis of diaryloxydiazirines, precursors to diaryloxycarbenes, is described. Thermolyses of the diazirines afford anticipated carbene products, but photolyses afford both carbenes and aryloxy radicals by alpha-scission. UV spectra of the carbenes and radicals are observed.
