Both the cancer incident rate and mortality rate are increasing in Japan. Well-balanced and strategic measures effectively combining primary and secondary preventions are required. In this article, primary prevention measures, such as smoking control and improvement of dietary habits, and secondary prevention measures, such as new methods of cancer screening are discussed. The importance of establishing a Center for Cancer Prevention and Screening is also discussed.
