A high frequency of genetic alterations of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) gene and overexpression of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene have been observed independently in human sporadic renal cell carcinoma (RCCs), but to the authors' knowledge the association between the two has not been characterized in primary sporadic RCC. In the current study the authors report the simultaneous comparison of the biallelic inactivation status of the VHL gene and VEGF expression levels in patients with sporadic RCC.
