Fractures of the mandibular condyle are frequently seen. There is no consensus on the most appropriate treatment modality. Closed reduction with help of arch bars and guiding elastics is in most cases sufficient. Open reduction and fixation with a plate osteosynthesis or a specially designed lag screw is occasionally performed. Intracapsular fractures of the condylar head are only operated in case of severely reduced mobility, or ankylosis. Fractures of the mandibular condyle normally heal uneventfully. Complications mostly occur in bilateral condylar neck fractures, or intracapsular fractures.
