AIDS: Studies presented at IDSA showed that measures to control other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) help to reduce the number of HIV infections. An examination of studies in sub-Saharan Africa showed that high viral loads may make transmission of HIV more likely. The South African Lesidi Project illustrates the severe impact that HIV has on the healthy workforce in some parts of the world and notes that it is in corporations' interest to invest in HIV prevention programs for employees. The 100 percent Condom Campaign in Thailand is described. This program publicly promotes condom use by commercial sex workers, and as a result, the rates of STDs and sexually-acquired HIV have declined. Studies on syphilis transmission, STD screening in special populations, and HIV outreach efforts are also discussed.
