Povidone-iodine is capable of specifically altering the DNA of living cells. This alteration may result in the induction of mutations of the base-substitution type. Because of the known relationship between mutagenic potential and the ability to induce cancer in animals, the present findings raise serious questions concerning the safety of this topical disinfectant.
