The association between microalbuminuria and magnesium depletion is a controversial issue, and serum ionized magnesium levels have not been previously studied in patients with different grades of diabetic nephropathy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate circulating ionized magnesium concentrations in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and incipient or overt diabetic nephropathy.
