Chorea-acanthocytosis is a disorder characterized by neuronal degeneration and the presence of acanthocytic erythrocytes on blood smear. The abnormal function and structure of the membrane protein band 3 are considered to be of pathogenetic relevance in determining the erythrocyte defect.
