The role of conservative surgery and radiation for mammographically detected ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is controversial. In particular, there is little data for outcome with radiation in a group of patients comparable to those treated with local excision and surveillance (mammographic calcifications < or = 2.5 cm, negative resection margins, negative postbiopsy mammogram). This study reports outcome of conservative surgery and radiation for mammographically detected DCIS with an emphasis on results in patients considered candidates for excision alone.
